POULTRY, PORK and livestock meat may soon be added to the growing list of items for which consumers will have to pay more.
That’s why chief executive officer of the Barbados Agricultural Society (BAS), James Paul, wants an urgent meeting with Minister of Agriculture Indar Weir to discuss challenges in the sector, particularly the rate of the Garbage and Sewage Contribution on farming and processing operations.
During a Press conference at his office at “The Grotto”, Beckles Road, St Michael yesterday, Paul, along with president of the Association of Pig Farmers Woodville Alleyne-Jones, called for the threshold of the rate to be raised. While not identifying to what level, he argued that the present 45 cubic metres was too low. Farmers are charged $4.46 for water under 45 cubic metres and anything above that rate is at $7.76.
