GEORGETOWN, Guyana – The President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo, is to pay an official visit to Guyana in June.
President David Granger said that his counterpart will be visiting from June 11 -12.
“We are confident that this visit will result in practical measures aimed at enhancing relations and cooperation between our two states, particularly in the fields of agriculture, culture, energy, environment, investment, petroleum production, private sector cooperation, tourism and transportation,” Granger said as he accepted the Letters of Credence from the Ghana’s new High Commissioner to Guyana, Professor Abena Busia last Wednesday.
The diplomat said that she hopes to use her tenure here to “translate our bilateral ties into vibrant economic cooperation with the private sector which is regarded as the engine of growth, for the mutual benefit of our two countries specifically areas of trade and investment, agriculture, education, culture and new approaches to heritage tourism”.
She said both countries share common interests in the global energy market and expressed the hope that she receives the support for all stakeholders to create the proper environment for the promotion of the sector.
Granger acknowledged that climate change represents a threat to the economy of both countries.
“Guyana is in transition towards the establishment of a ‘green state’ which will see more emphasis being placed on the protection of our environment, the preservation of our biodiversity, the promotion of renewable energy generation, and practical measures to ensure climate adaptation. Guyana’s ‘green state’ will allow us to respond more effectively to the challenges posed by climate change,” he added.
Guyana and Ghana established diplomatic relations in 1979. (CMC)
