As demand for the Salvation Army’s services grows, its management is appealing to Government to increase financial support to the organisation.
Chairman of the Army’s advisory board, Paul Bernstein, made this request yesterday after noting that when the state cut its spending on charities a few years ago, the organisation was put in a bind.
Bernstein was unable to say how much the spending was cut by, but he stressed that the charity needed more money.
“There was a cut by the austerity measures that were in place, and it’s a double strain for us because when they cut the stipend it meant less income, and when things are tight in times of austerity, there is more demand for the Salvation Army.
So it’s a combination of having to feed more people, and less income coming in from the Welfare,” Bernstein said. (TG)
