Relief for Govt units’ occupants

Some of those living in Government housing schemes are now less anxious about the electrical wiring in their units catching afire.

That’s because Government has embarked on a $2 million programme to refurbish the outdated electrical installations in more than 250 units across the island.

Yesterday, workmen were in Haynesville, St James, setting up wiring as a touring party hosted by representative for St James South, Sandra Husbands, passed through. She said she was thrilled about it.

“In the housing area, the wiring is more than 40 years old. Each unit has one outlet in the living room, one in the kitchen and one between the two bedrooms upstairs but modern families have a lot of appliances so it cannot carry that load and what was happening was breakers were tripping, sparks were flying and then we had four house fires and six units destroyed,” she said.
