Cold storage business booming

The coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis has crippled most of corporate Barbados, but BICO Limited is weathering the storm.

Executive chairman Edwin Thirlwell revealed yesterday that business was booming at the company’s Harbour Cold Store, the country’s largest storage area for imported and local goods that need to be kept chilled or frozen.

Barbados’ agricultural sector has been a big beneficiary of the facility, he said, in an interview, calling the situation “unusually busy”.

With fast food outlets, other restaurants and hotels closed, large poultry processors and small poultry farmers have been using BICO’s one million cubic feet of space to store some of their product. (SC)
