Sanitation workers do critical work and should be respected for their front line role, says Carl Padmore, public relations officer of the Sanitation Service Authority (SSA).
He lamented that despite their yeoman task every day of the year, come rain or shine, prevailing diseases or not, SSA workers were on the streets performing a task that most Barbadians shunned.
“We see ourselves as part of the front line in the fight against COVID-19. However, oftentimes the . . . staff of the SSA don’t always feel as if they are treated fairly in that fight. Our job is just as important as anyone who is on the front line,” said Padmore yesterday as he announced an initiative for Barbadians to show their appreciation for the workers.
“On Wednesday morning we are hoping to have Barbadians blow, hail up or shout out all SSA workers . . . . Once you see an SSA crew or truck, we are urging you to pause to say thank you, and to let the fellows know that you appreciate the work they are doing because while the doctors and nurses are at the hospital, all of the waste we deal with,” he said.
He explained the SSA initiative was being held in the morning around 10:15 and again around 12:15 p.m. It will compliment Clap Barbados’ salute to all front line workers held on Wednesday evenings. (SP)
