Two houses extensively damaged by fire

Two people were left pondering their next move on May 1 when their homes were extensively damaged by fire.

Officers under the leadership of Jeffrey Holligan responded to a fire at Golden Rock, The Pine, St Michael.

Holligan said the Fire Service received a report around 8 p.m. and on arrival found two houses engulfed in flames.

Both houses were extensively damaged. The house where the fire started also had a shop attached. It was owned by 62-year-old Wayne Carrington, who lived alone.

A female was the sole occupant of the other house, according to Holligan. Neither house was insured.

Carrington said he had operated the shop for about seven years.

He said neighbours rushed to help him because “he lived good with people” and never fussed if they came up “25 cents short or a dollar short” when making purchases.

Fire officers responded from the station in The Pine and managed to extinguish the fire in about two hours.

Police were on the scene and kept curious onlookers in check as they tried to ensure physical distancing protocols were observed. (KG)
