Media awards in November

Several media practitioners in Barbados will later this year be rewarded for their contribution, as The Barbados Association of Journalists and Media Workers (BARJAM), gets set to host its Media Awards of Excellence.

(BARJAM) believes that it has been too long since an event of this type has taken place, and wants to use this opportunity to give those persons recognition for their sterling contribution over the years.

The ceremony, which is expected to take place late November, is being made possible through assistance from The United States Embassy in Barbados, and will also form part of celebrations for World Press Freedom Day 2020.

World Press Freedom Day is celebrated May 3 annually. It is a day set aside to recognise the irreplaceable contribution that a free press makes to a healthy and successful democracy.

President of BARJAM Emmanuel Joseph said, “Brave journalists, and their courageous editors, play an invaluable role in the modern world, by giving voice to alternative ideas and questioning the status quo.”

He said the awards ceremony will highlight the importance of defending media freedom, demonstrate the key role the media play in creating an inclusive and open society in Barbados and the region and formally recognising works of excellence.

Among the awards which will be up for grabs include Journalist of the Year, Talk Show Host of the Year, Programme of the Year (TV), Programme of the Year (Radio), Rookie Journalist of the Year, Photographer of the Year and PRO/Corporate Communications Specialist of the Year.

U.S. Ambassador Linda Taglialatela said, “The U.S. Embassy is honoured to partner with BARJAM to recognise the principled, independent, and professional work of journalists in Barbados and the indispensable role of a free press in a prosperous democracy.”

Full details of the awards will be posted on the BARJAM Facebook page, and will also be published in the local media. (PR)
