Prescod: Consider the poor people

As Government moves to enforce a national building code, it is being urged to ensure “poor people” are not disadvantaged by the policy.

Minister of the Environment and National Beautification Trevor Prescod made that appeal yesterday, pointing out that poverty was increasing and that some low-income earners were resorting to building plywood houses.

He was speaking in the House of Assembly during debate on the Planning And Development (Amendment) Act 2020, which was later approved.

The St Michael East MP said he was aware “there is a necessity for a building code . . . but in a very pragmatic sense what I am experiencing is because of all that is happening around us; the society is being driven back into abject poverty.” (SC)
