Lawmen knocked for case work

A High Court Judge has taken police investigators to task for their heavy reliance on confession statements and eyewitness accounts.

Justice Carlisle Greaves said he had noticed the trend in all the cases he had heard so far and, in an era of technology and scientific analysis, witnesses deserved better.

The judge, who has presided over the No. 3 Supreme Court for the last two years since being brought back to tackle the backlog, was speaking as he imposed a suspended sentence and probation on Nakimo Skeete who had been found guilty of assault with intent to rob.

Greaves, a former magistrate in Barbados who went on to serve as a puisne judge in Bermuda for 20 years, bemoaned the state of investigations and said he looked “forward to the day when we will stop relying so much on eyewitness testimony and confessions from accused”. (HLE)
