BMS issues flood watch for the island

The Barbados Meteorological Services has issued a Flood Watch for the island.

The advisory was prompted by excessive rainfall which has been affecting the island since this morning, with conditions expected to peak tonight and into Monday. The combination of surface to low-level convergence, upper-level divergence, and deep-layer moisture has created unstable weather conditions, resulting in mostly cloudy skies and intermittent light to heavy showers.

Isolated thunderstorms are also possible, with rainfall accumulations forecasted to reach between one to two inches (25 to 50 mm).

Officials warn that there is a medium possibility of significant flooding, especially in low-lying and flood-prone areas. This may lead to water runoff from higher elevations, soil erosion on scarred or exposed land, and water settling on roads and fields, particularly at the foot of hills and along coastal roads. Motorists may experience delays on some routes, with a few roads potentially becoming impassable.

The public is strongly advised to remain vigilant and monitor official updates from the Barbados Meteorological Services, the Department of Emergency Management (DEM), and the Government Information Service (GIS) via their websites, social media platforms, and local news outlets.

A Flood Watch means conditions are favourable for flooding within the next 48 hours. While it does not confirm that flooding will occur, the possibility exists.

The current watch will remain in effect until 6 a.m. on Monday or may be updated earlier if conditions change.
