Boxing ring weds coach to Belfield

DEEP IN THE HEART of Belfield Land, Black Rock, Kelvin Nowell is quietly shaping the hearts and minds of some of this country’s young people.

He’s done it for almost 30 years, and there aren’t any signs of him slowing down.

The noise of the gym is filtered out by the many activities associated with the sports crazy St Michael community, but this man’s work has always been done quietly anyway.

Nowell, 55, has been the boxing coach at the Belfield Boxing Gym since 1995, and along the way, that facility has nurtured some of the best glovemen this country has ever produced.

And now, with Nowell’s help, the Belfield Gym could be on the verge of producing the first champion female boxer. (BA)
