Members of the journalism fraternity turned out today to say goodbye to one of their own – broadcaster Vere Walcott.
The service was held at the Abundant Life Assembly, Haynes Hill, Bank Hall, St Michael.
Tributes were paid in word and song as friends and family heard of Walcott’s passion for Jesus and journalism.
Broadcaster Everton Mottley said Walcott was not about magnifying himself and did not focus on the material things in life. Mottley said he and Walcott met as reporters at the Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation in the 80s and Walcott was one never to stray from ministering.
Mottley said Walcott used every opportunity to talk about the Lord. This caused him to be referred to as Pastor Pooler, after a popular preacher of that day.
He said Walcott fell asleep with style and grace.
Peter Thorne, who glowingly spoke of Walcott’s tenacity, said he was good enough to fit into any newsroom internationally. Thorne described him as selfless and never arrogant.
He also recalled Walcott as a passionate CBer who initiated the Eye In The Sky traffic reports at CBC.
Reverend Cameron Connolly in his address, based on the scripture John 14 1-6, saluted Walcott as one who surrendered his soul to God.
He said Walcott had hope in Jesus because He had prepared a mansion for those with faith.
Connolly beseeched his congregation not to let their hearts be troubled though things would not always go in their favour. (JS)
