Banker upbeat about economy

Count senior banker Ian De Souza out of the “doom and gloom” crowd in Barbados.

Buoyed that his company was “doing exceptionally well” while also pointing to signs of a resurgence in tourism and construction, the Republic Bank (Barbados) Ltd managing director and chief executive officer is predicting “a turn” in the economy “towards the end” of this year.

An upbeat De Souza made the prediction Monday night during a reception at his Villa Rosa, Royal Westmoreland, St James residence.

He said “people are tired of the gloom and doom” forecasts for Barbados and that based on the recovery in the key United Kingdom market and other factors including construction, he was confident that “we are coming around”.
