UCI boost for regional meets

NOW THERE’S EVEN MORE incentive to do well at the region’s big cycling events.

Highly-coveted UCI points will be up for grabs from next year as the sport’s world governing body is set to sanction at least five regional championships, including the 2015 Caribbean Elite Cycling Championships right here in Barbados.

Caribbean Cycling Federation president Trevor Bailey broke the news yesterday while making the official handing over of gear and bicycles to the Barbados Cycling Union (BCU) at the Barbados Olympic Association’s headquarters.

“It gives the race a higher profile, and that is key to the whole situation, as riders can now get points that keep adding up and those points could see you getting to World Cups and help with a world ranking” said BCU president Keith Yearwood.
