WITHIN the next two to three years, 12 World War II ex-servicemen will have a place to call home at a cost of $1.5 million.
This was disclosed yesterday by president of the Barbados Legion, Captain Peter Short.
He said the legion would be seeking assistance in raising these funds from the British Commonwealth Ex-Services League, The Royal Canadian Legion as well as the Barbados Government.
“We have sent information to London to the British Commonwealth Ex-Services League because we have an estimate of $1.5 million and that is for a hostel to house 12,” he told the Daily Nation following yesterday’s Remembrance Day service at National Heroes Square.
“I believe that we will get the assistance from these three entities and I hope that in a couple of years it [the hostel] will be a reality,” Short said.
At the end of the 76th meeting of the British Ex-Services League’s four-day conference held in April this year at the Accra Beach Hotel, plans for its proposed construction were announced by Short.
He also disclosed that the hostel would be constructed on half-acre of land west of the Barbados Turf Club’s Grand Stand at the Garrison Savannah.
Short added that the veterans could spend their remaining years in comfortable surroundings where they would be adequately looked after.
