An extensive air-sea search for Barbadians Arthur Alleyne and his wife Sharon Went-Alleyne enters its fifth day today.
Anxious family members in Barbados and St Lucia, where the couple have lived for the past 19 years, have been awaiting word on the fate of the couple since Saturday when they left St Lucia for Barbados on the yacht Serenity.
Alleyne was captaining the 47-foot fibreglass sloop which his daughter Arianne Moore said he was bringing back to Barbados for a friend.
The couple reportedly set sail on Saturday afternoon for the trip which a member of the local sailing fraternity said should have taken “14 hours at the most”.
It is a sail which “sea dog” Alleyne has done several times.
However, there was some concern when the yacht did not arrive, and Moore said when efforts to contact her father and stepmother failed, the family and other interests in Barbados immediately reached out to authorities in St Lucia.
The last contact from her father was a call to a friend in St Lucia at 2:15 p.m. Saturday “to let them know that he was 35 miles off St Lucia and that he should be in Barbados by midnight”.
He never arrived.
