NUPW face-off

General secretary of Barbados’ largest public sector union, the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) Roslyn Smith, is threatening to sue its president, Akanni McDowall for defamation.

But McDowall is questioning whether the timing of the announcement is meant to have an effect on the union’s pending election of officers at its annual general meeting April 3.

Smith, who is currently hospitalised while recovering from an illness, said in a statement yesterday that her rights were infringed by a memo dated August 28 last year, in which McDowell addressed the national council of the union about the alleged use of a corporate credit card by the general secretary.
