FAIRCHILD STREET VENDORS who have been subletting stalls and owe money to Government will not be allowed to reopen those stalls next month.
That’s the word from Manager of Markets Henderson Greaves, who told vendors at a meeting yesterday that not only was subletting illegal but monies owed for several stalls at the front of the Fairchild Street Market in?Bridgetown must be paid while the area is closed next week for the removal of asbestos from the market’s roof.
“I am not going to back off this because everybody wants Government to do A, C and D but persons don’t want to pull their weight or pull their pocket . . . . You complain about taking the roof off and the week that you’re not going to make any money, but you have not made an effort to settle your indebtedness to the Government,” Greaves told vendors.
Adding that the Ministry of Agriculture had been requesting this money for some time, Greaves said he had not yet “heard from one boy, girl, child, man or woman”, and urged the defaulters to contact his office in order that a payment plan can be discussed.
