Broomes: Award to help needy

Alexandra School principal Jeff Broomes yesterday launched a benevolent award in honour of his late father-in-law to help meet the financial needs of students entering secondary school.
Broomes, who is at the centre of a soon-to-begin inquiry into operations at his school, launched the Sylvester Griffith Award during the 20th graduation ceremony of Gordon Greenidge Primary in Upper Rock Dundo, St James.
He announced it would be awarded annually to a needy student of that school who also displayed a high standard of discipline as Griffith, who resided in the Rock Dundo area, stood for and imparted such values.
“This community has become a part of me . . . and has given me the best thing I have in my life . . .  I have [also] been coming to this school from its inception and when I used to do a [television] programme called Book Talk, I would come here and do a little book talk and reading with the children.”
