Study: One in six not religious

A new global study has found that about one in every six people worldwide has no religious affiliation – a statistic that is even higher in two Caribbean nations: Cuba and Jamaica.
The study, by the Pew Research Centre of Washington, makes the “unaffiliated” – with 16 per cent of the global population – the third-largest group in the world after Christians and Muslims.
Twenty-three per cent of Cubans and 17.2 per cent claim no religious affiliation – a label that includes atheists and agnostics, as well as some who have religious beliefs but don’t identify with a particular faith.
The finding for Cuba, which is ruled by the communist party, is not surprising but Jamaica’s is. (BEN)
