FOR NEARLY TWO HOURS yesterday, members of the Royal Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animal (RSPCA) and a concerned passer-by fought valiantly to save thelife of a trapped horse.
But their efforts came to nought when the critically injured, woefully thin but bloated, animal had to be humanely euthanized.
It was a saga that began on Wednesday morning when officials from the Barbados Fire Service made an urgent call for assistance to the RSPCA about a horse that was trapped in a canal by the James A. Tudor roundabout.
Then, it took the combined efforts of fire officers and RSPCA vet Dr William Huey, vet assistant Naresh Belgrave and inspector Wayne Norville, along with C.O. Williams earth mover driver Rickie Alleyne and personnel from Backhoe Rentals and Online Trucking, to rescue it. They left the horse sedated, but with a fighting chance of survival.
