The reopening of the National Stadium will signal the launch of an ambitious and futuristic project that should give Barbadians facilities at Waterford on par with First World standards.
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Stephen Lashley says a facelift is on the cards for the venue.
“It is clear that this National Stadium needs a complete rework of the stands, the lights and the velodrome area,” he said in an exclusive interview with NATIONSPORT while he was on a visit to the Stadium to view the work of relaying the track and refurbishing some of the infrastructure.
“The access of funding is now critical to our plans of completing the circle of stands on the Codrington side,” he said.
“The present stands have outlived their utility . . . . They are still sound and safe, but those stands will have to be demolished to make way for modern stands and an infrastructure that could see the National Sports Council’s headquarters as well as offices for sporting associations being housed at the Stadium.”
