Herbert Courtland’s shack in the green space off Constitution River in The City has been removed less than 24 hours after it was highlighted by the WEEKEND?NATION.
National Conservation Commission (NCC) officials, under the supervision of police, moved swiftly yesterday to dismantle the illegal structure that was built during the week opposite Starcom Network on River Road.
After more than $50 million was spent to upgrade and beautify Constitution River and create the new Church Village green space, chief executive officer of the Barbados Tourism Investment Inc., Stuart Layne, made it clear that the structure “has to be removed”.
NCC general manager Keith Neblett, whose agency is responsible for maintaining the green spaces, said: “We don’t give permission for vending in those areas and certainly any structure built there would be illegal. The areas are to be kept as green spaces for the public and as soon as you open up for one person the others are going to come.”
