A wave of blue and white made its way from Dover Playing Field to Oistins yesterday when the Oistins Fish Parade progressed along the south coast.
The addition to the 34-year-old Oistins Fish Festival drew curious onlookers who lined the streets to get a glimpse of the parade which featured over 150 children from the communities between Dover and Oistins.
The carnival-style festival parade organized by veteran bandleader Betty West, and themed Moving The Ocean Up To The Streets, had little children dressed in beautifully airbrushed costumes depicting sailors, fish and other beautiful aspects of the ocean.
West said the parade was conceptualized to be a cultural thing for the community.
“It is not a money-making event but something for the community where all the children are given the costumes free of cost.”
She added that the parade started in the popular tourist area of Dover so the tourists could see what was going on and take in this bit of Barbadian culture.
As the music truck snaked it way along Dover, then onto Maxwell Main Road, the children, dressed in their aquamarine and white costumes, partied to some of the hits of Crop Over 2010 and also some of the popular songs from this year’s Trinidad Carnival.
Also involved were the Oistins fisherfolk, who had a section in the parade.
At the end of the parade West explained that the response was very promising and it was expected that it would become a fixture on the Oistins Fish Festival schedule.
