Quantum Leap’s Levi Cadogan won the men’s 100 metres yesterday as the 2013 Louis Lynch Championships got off to a low-key start at Harrison College.
Cadogan started well and was able to power away from the rest of the field, but seemed to be in some difficulty when he crossed the finish line in 10.75 seconds.
Mario Burke of the High Performance Programme slipped at the start, but did well to recover and take second spot in 10.95 seconds, followed by Foundation’s Kyle Farrell in 11.15.
The rich, green field has now given away to a hard, compact surface covered in brown grass and clearly in need of watering and rolling. There were a few precarious moments for athletes on the uneven surface and quite a few had to seek medical attention.
Shakera Reece of Quantum Leap emerged unscathed, winning the women’s 100 metres in 12.12 seconds, but everyone was talking about young Tristan Evelyn of Rising Stars who ran a strong race, pulled along in 12.42, a full second ahead of UWI’s Jalisa Taylor.
Jabarry Cumberbatch of Combermere won the Under-17 Boys’ race in 11.28 from Pacers’ Kentoine Browne (11.35) as the two powered to the finish line in a close battle.
Timeka Jordan of Rising Stars won the girls’ race, but no official time was available. Other winners in the dash were The Lodge School’s Tremaine Smith (11.94) who edged FTFA’s Shashamani Kellman (11.97) to win the Under-15 Boys’ timed finals, while FTFA’s Kiera Forde-Richards took the Under-15 girls’ race in 13.40, HPP’s Jamie Drayton second in 13.43.
The men’s 400 metres was a fight to the finish between Pacers’ Christopher Davis and Shaquille Alleyne of Freedom Striders, but Davis getting the edge in 49.74 to Alleyne’s 49.77.
Sharon Larrier cruised to victory in the women’s race in 57.75 from Freedom Striders’ Shani Adams (58.09), but Tia-Adana Belle (59.09) was too conservative over the first half.
The Rising Stars duo of Tiana Bowen and Rivaldo Leacock won the Under-17 400 metres in 59.51 and 51.98 seconds, respectively.
Elite Distance’s Joshua Hunte led most of the men’s 1 500 metres, only to lose it over the last 50 metres when he was overtaken by Rashid Blackman of Freedom Striders. Blackman clocked 4:16.50 and Hunte 4:27.40.
Khobi Noel (4:50.70) of Freedom Striders won the Under-17 boys’ race and Elizabeth Williams of Elite Distance was the runaway winner of the women’s event in 5:46.10.
In the best from the field events, Tristan Whitehall of Elite Distance threw 53.08 metres in the Under-20 boys’ discus, while Ashley Williams of Rising Stars had a put measuring 12.02m in the Under-20 girls’ shot put.
