Management of Subway Barbados has taken issue with recent statements by chief executive officer of the Barbados Agricultural Society (BAS), James Paul, calling them inaccurate and misleading.
Paul said at a meeting Saturday that Barbados’ poultry industry was under threat from major fast food outlets that want to import most, if not all, of their meat.
But Frederick George, director of Alfundi Investments Ltd, a local company which owns Subway Barbados, told the WEEKEND NATION that Subway purchased locally produced products such as ham and various vegetables, in relatively substantial quantities and only resorted to imports if the item or items were in short supply or unavailable on the local or CARICOM market.
George, however, agreed with Paul’s call for a level playing field, saying Subway Barbados was being charged 184 per cent duty on most of the products used in the preparation of their sandwiches, while in all other Caribbean territories the duty averaged between 20 to 50 per cent. (AH)
