British politicians are stepping in to fight the cause of the Barbadian family of a young man who was killed by police in Bridgetown earlier this year.
As the family of Jamar Maynard continues to press for the officer who pulled the trigger to be arrested, British parliamentarian Gavin Shuker, who represents the Luton South constituency in which Maynard’s uncle Trevor Maynard resides, has sought the assistance of British Foreign Secretary William Hague.
“We want an arrest and we want to put as much pressure on the Barbados justice system so my sister can get to the bottom of what happened with her son,” Barbadian-born Maynard, who has lived in Britain for almost two decades, told the SUNDAY SUN.
His 27-year-old nephew, formerly of Denton Road, Grazettes, St Michael, was shot by a police detective who was on foot patrol with another colleague along Cheapside in The City, on the night of April 3.
Police alleged that Jamar Maynard, one of two men encountered by the officers, was shot after he drew a firearm. He died the following morning.
