DEAR CHRISTINE: On priority list but still no house

Dear Christine,
How are you? I hope God has been good to you and yours. I am a desperate mum, who is so frustrated. I want to know how bad my situation must be before I can receive help.
I have been to the Welfare Department, Urban Development Commission, National Housing Corporation, Child Care Board, Ministry of Housing, even three MPs over and over so often that at some of these places the staff know me from the time I walk through the door, or they recognize my voice on the telephone.
I am a single parent living at home. I share a bedroom and a bed with my children and things aren’t great at all.
After three years of walking up and down, and in and out of these offices telling these people about my problems, still nothing has been done. All I keep hearing is: “We have you on the priority list.”
Wow! You mean after three years?
It has left me no choice but to cut my nose and spoil my features by separating my children to make life a bit better and safer for them.
It hurts to see how family can treat you so. I am employed. I just need some place to live so I can bring my children back together with me.
Is there anyone who cares enough to rent me a house, preferably a two- or three-bedroom? I can only afford to pay between $600 to $750 monthly right now.
I pray that God would touch someone’s heart.
Thank you.
– A?CRY?OF?A?DESPERATE?MUM
Dear Desperate Mum,
I am placing your letter in this column with the hope that the authorities read about your plight and look at securing some type of housing for you. In that way you won’t have to spend all that money on rent, and you’ll be in a better position to provide for your children.
It hurts me when two people bring children into the world and then one parent is left to see after the welfare of those children. This is not right! Where is the father of these children?
You should not be bearing these burdens on your own.
If Government fails to look into your situation, I hope that some reader with a place to rent comes to your aid.
You have not provided any contact information for me to do anything for you, other than to print your letter, with the hope that it results in some form of help for you.
No matter what, don’t give up. Believe that things will get better.
– CHRISTINE
