THE GUILD OF STUDENTS of the University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus hasn’t made any progress in talks aimed at getting Government to change its position on fees.
In fact, president Damani Parris says that to all intents and purposes, those talks have broken down.
Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler, in delivering his budget last year, said that from this year Barbadians pursuing studies at the UWI’s campuses would be required to pay tuition fees, while Government continued to foot the economic costs.
However, during a Press conference today Parris said not many students and their families could meet the requirement to pay an additional $5 000 per year, starting next September. He warned that student numbers at the university would fall sharply because of this. (TY)
