THE?Barbados Darts team recently returned home after a commendable showing at the 19th World Cup, held in Newfoundland, Canada, earlier this month.
After a series of competitive matches, the women are now ranked an impressive 15th place while the men are 22nd.
Their impressive position was particularly aided by the performance of rookie members Shelly Taylor and Mark Griffith, who handled the pressure well and adjusted quickly, much to the delight of their teammates and coach Gregory Catlyn.
“The new players to the team, Mark Griffith and Shelly Taylor, benefited tremendously from the exposure,” said Catlyn.
Impressive
In the team event, Griffith won an impressive three out of four encounters, but his efforts alone were not enough as his teammates lost all of their games.
Griffith then paired up with Roger Edwards for the doubles event and they reached the last 32 but the Canadian pair of St Croix and Havlon proved to be too much on the day.
Another doubles pair, Anthony Forde and Clyde Murrell, started off impressively, winning 4-0 over Trinidad and Tobago, but were ousted by another Canadian pair, Wallace and Cameron, by a similar margin.
Taylor showed grit and character throughout the competition as she reached the quarter-finals. She defeated Kelly McGivern of Northern Ireland in her first match, then brushed aside Sandra Fergusson of the Bahamas.
She had to work hard in her third match, coming from 0-2 down to defeat the Republic of Ireland’s Olive McIntyre 4-3.
Catlyn said he would be ensuring that the players did slacken their efforts.
“I am pleased with the overall performances, but there is a lot of work to be done,” he said. (ROG)
