Doctor Joseph Herbert has been given the Intern of the Year 2009-2010 award in recognition of exemplary performance in his role as intern at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.Herbert was chosen from a field of 29 doctors who completed their internship in June 2010. Also designated as outstanding interns were Dr Cherian Felix, Dr Nancy Lawrence, Dr Danielle Dottin, and Dr Camille Greaves. Dr Clyde Cave, coordinator of the internship programme, said there was a bit of confusion in the public on what was an intern. Cave said that he wanted to clarify that an intern was a doctor who possessed a degree but needed to complete the process of training in the hospital setting in order to get their licence to become registered as a general practicioner or to do further studies. The interns counted the experience as a humbling one, especially knowing that someone looked to them for answers. Herbert said the internship taught him the importance of teamwork and time management.  He said the internship had shaped his next step in being a doctor in terms of learning how to deal with responsibility, make judgements efficiently, deal with pressure and understand that a mistake could have serious repercussions.
