Baller gets scholarship

IMPOSING SIX-FOOT-FIVE multi-talented sportsman John Jones has gained a dream come true belated birthday present – a two-year basketball scholarship to Howe School in Indiana, the United States.
Jones, who turned 18 on August 12, has represented Barbados on three occasions at the CARIFTA Games, winning bronze and silver medals in the javelin, shot put and the discus. 
The lead player for the Garrison School basketball team, Jones has also played for Premier League sides Warriors and Tridents, having represented Barbados at the Under-19 level in that sport.Off to IndianaJones left for Indiana yesterday morning after securing a ticket from Co-operators General Insurance on Monday with general manager Anton Lovell, who is a former national basketballer, expressing delight at helping a national athlete at the critical stage rather than later when that athlete has already achieved.Co-operators also sponsors the Elite Distance Track and Field Club of which Jones is a member. 
The scholarship was secured by Barbados’ junior basketball coach Derek Browne, who then sourced Co-operators for help with the ticket for Jones. 
In expressing his delight over getting the scholarship, Jones indicated he felt proud to go and represent his country while advancing his academics and basketball opportunities. 
When quizzed about potential colleges or basketball offers at the end of the two years, Jones confidently responded:
“I believe that if I give it my best shot and allow my talent to work for me then the scouts and coaches will find me.” (KB)
