OUTSIDE THE PULPIT: Proud to be Barbadian

The Lord himself is the portion of mine inheritance, and of my cup:  thou shalt maintain my lot. The lot is fallen unto me in a fair ground; yea I have a goodly heritage. – Psalm 16: 6 and 7
I would like to take this opportunity to wish my country Barbados and its people a happy 46th anniversary of nationhood. May it continue to prosper. I also pray that this beautiful country of ours will continue to be a God-fearing one.
“For except the Lord build the house their labour is but lost that build it. Except the Lord keep the city; the watchman waketh in vain.” Psalm 127: 1 and 2.
As a nation we have come a long way in managing our own affairs in all areas and sectors.
The Head of State (Governor General), Government (Prime Minister), church, law enforcement agencies, education institutions are all headed by capable black men and women who are holding their own, and this came about after we became an independent nation in 1966.
Since 1966, we have been able to educate our people at all levels. I am proud to be a Barbadian and to know that we do not have to be told by outsiders what to do.
As a nation, we will have our ups and downs, especially in these days of worldwide recession. But I am sure that the same God who has brought us so far will continue to be ever mindful of us.
One thing that we must not forget is that over the years we have had good political leaders, and we must thank God for that.
As we celebrate our 46th anniversary, let us take the advice of St Paul, who reminded the Corinthian church to continue to build on what they had inherited. “For we are God’s fellow workers; you are God’s field, you are God’s building.
According to the grace of God which was given to me, as a wise master builder I have laid the foundation, and another builds on it. But let each one take heed how he builds on it.” 1 Corinthians 3: 9 and 10.
As we celebrate Independence Day tomorrow, let all of us continue to build on the work of our foreparents.
