The?Barbados Chess Federation took the game to the people on Saturday.
Several players, parents and administrators set up boards in the food court of Sky Mall, Haggatt Hall and played a few matches against passers-by.
The organization’s president, Rohan Waithe, told MIDWEEKSPORT although it was a slow start, the overall response was good.
“A lot of people came over to learn about chess, some asked about classes and others signed up to learn to play,” Waithe said.
In addition to promoting the board game, they were also showcasing some of the talented junior players who have been excelling locally and regionally.
The BCF can boast of the achievements of Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Under-18 champion Orlando Husbands; Under-16 CARIFTA gold medallist Yu Tien-Poon, and Allon Richards, the Under-15 Pan American Scholastic Chess Champion.
Waithe said the final achievement was especially good because all of the South American countries were represented at the Pan Am Championships.
The federation is hoping to compete at CAC again this year in December and will be staging a fund-raising barbeque and ball at the Barbados Yacht Club on September 21. (SAT)
