Opposition members of Parliament, Gline Clarke and Cynthia Forde, are calling for a programme to assist non-nationals in getting information and treatment on HIV-AIDS in Barbados.
Stating that this group of people had become afraid to seek healthcare because of “harsh immigration policies”, Clarke said a programme should be put in place by Government to help non-nationals who worked in local nightclubs as dancers or were married to Barbadians.
He said there was a need not only for the National HIV-AIDS Commission to go into the nightclubs and see what was happening but, as the country moved forward into this century, Government must embrace in particular Caribbean people as a way of ensuring that sexually transmitted diseases were not spread across Barbados.
“We need to understand that the health of one affects all, and Government must put in place a proactive programme,” Clarke said while speaking on a $9 million resolution to boost the national HIV-AIDS programme today. (RJ)
