Students at Bay Primary got a lesson in Nigerian history yesterday as they celebrated African Awareness Day in honour of Black History Month.
Both students and teachers were outfitted in colourful African attire as they listened to speakers, Maryam Hinds, director of the Barbados Drug Service, and Anita Oredein, a pharmacist.
Hinds and Oredein, who are from Nigeria, spoke to students on the 500 languages spoken in the West African nation, led them in song in four (Ibo, Hausa, Yoruba and Urhobo) and showed them different hand-made African artifacts.
Jennifer Sealy, a senior teacher, organised the day’s activities that also featured a street parade, tuk band, Mother Sally and limbo dancers.
