More time for NIS to collect

Government can now go after a number of defaulters who failed to pay their contributions to the National Insurance Scheme.
Yesterday the House of Assembly agreed to allow an amendment to the National Insurance and Social Security Act giving the National Insurance Board six years instead of three to recover monies owed by defaulters.
Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler stated that management at the National Insurance Scheme had found itself in a predicament arising out of a judgment of the court.
He explained that on May 13, 2009 the National Insurance Board filed an action in the Magistrates’ Court pursuant to Section 43 of the act to recover contributions owed by a self-employed person for the period between April 2003 and December 2004. (MB)
