In care of ‘dons’

A criminologist is warning that gun violence has reached epidemic proportions and it is being compounded by the increasing presence of “dons” in communities.

Although senior research officer at the Criminal Justice Research and Planning Unit, Kim Ramsay, declined to identify the communities following a service to observe International Day of Peace on Friday, she pointed to the structure of society as an area that must be addressed.

“Sometimes, the violence that we see in our communities, the causes lie within the social structure of that society, where we look at unequal distribution of wealth and power, and then you have the haves and the have nots, where the have nots are looking on at the haves and saying that they have it, why can’t I? Why aren’t we doing any better? Why isn’t Government taking care of us?

“You see that in a lot of disadvantaged communities in the world, what people would call ghettos. And that’s why you have community leaders or what is referred to as “dons” coming up and taking care of those people in those communities because they see where governments and other institutions are failing the people,” she said.
