BABA to clear air

BASKETBALL’S local governing body appears ready to break its silence on the Ricardo Yearwood issue.
The Barbados Amateur Basketball Association (BABA) will hold a Press conference on Monday at the Barbados Olympic Association to address “the current state of basketball”, just one week after issuing Yearwood with a life ban.
Word of the upcoming media event came via email from BABA public relations officer Sydney Robertson yesterday.
Yearwood was served with the maximum penalty last week Wednesday for his well-publicised dropkick of Cougars point guard Keith Mayers during a Premier League contest two weeks ago.
His ban was just one of six penalties handed out within a week, which included the suspensions of fellow Station Hill Cavs Kelvin Patterson, Andrew Alleyne and Errol “Flash” Pollard.
It came in an apparent crackdown by the new Derrick Garrett administration on “abusive player behaviour”.
But Garrett has since been mum on the Yearwood issue, in particular, as Station Hill are expected to appeal the decision.
The life ban has become a highly debated national issue since video of Yearwood’s dropkick was televised multiple times on CBC before going viral on social media sites Facebook and YouTube. (JM)
