PATIENTS’ AVERAGE LENGTH of stay in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) will be reduced and some diagnostic services outsourced to save the Martindales Road institution money.
Also, overseas consultant specialists will continue to treat patients here and by doing so save the QEH the hefty costs of providing such care overseas for the same treatment through the Medical Aid Scheme.
These are three of the solutions QEH director Dr Dexter James provided as a means to plug the near $15 million operating deficit the hospital now faces.
James stated yesterday that the hospital needed $200 million a year to sustain the services it now provided. However, it currently received only $185 million.
