The Statistical Institute of Jamaica (STATIN) estimates that more than 16 000 children across the island are engaging in child labour. This is among the findings of a youth activity survey conducted by STATIN. The disclosure comes as Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller today expressed full support for Jamaica’s participation in the global campaign dubbed ‘Give the Red Card to Child Labour.’ The campaign, which is being spearheaded by the International Labour Organisation, the ILO, and the International Football Federation, seeks to build awareness and mobilise action against child labour. In endorsing the campaign, Simpson Miller said the wholesome childhood experience should not be burdened with hazardous and unhealthy work that denies children the opportunity of an education. The ILO’s 2010 Global Report on Child Labour estimates that there are over 215 million children engaging in hazardous work and illicit activities such as drug trafficking, prostitution and armed conflict.
