Defending champion Lil Rick and former king Mikey have the edge in the Party Monarch competition part of the MQI/98.1 The One Soca Royale.

It took some time to build here at Bushy Park, and Lil Rick finally got the crowd involved with his working of Mudda Sally. And when one of her wines put the Hypa Dawg on his back, everyone broke down in laughter.

After a call for smelling salts, he was back in his feet, ready to take her on again.

As the rain came, umbrellas went into the air and the crowd kept swaying and backing up pon de bumpas.

Mikey brought pure energy on stage with his all-red ensemble, doing My Kind Ah Party. The musical arrangement was superior to Rick’s and while he did not get the same crowd response, he handled every change in the song with ease.

The orange-haired songbird Nikita, dressed in all white, stood out like a beacon among her red-clad dancers. She was vocally strong with Going The Distance and should place.

Bashment Soca King Stiffy was well-received on his first trip to Bushy Park as a competitor with Lies. He has not really settled the question of who tells the most lies but it sticking with his conclusion that men tell the most, but women tell the biggest.

Mistah Dale also gave a strong performance with his delivery of Bold and Brave.

Also performing were first timers Chrissy D and Ashawnya doing Rum and Bass and Mess, respectively. Ashawnya pitch was too high throughout the song.

Mac Fingall’s Blows fell flat and the wild west theme Mr Blood and iWeb chose for Stomp contradicted the message of no violence. (SAT)
