ONE OF BARBADOS’ most experienced legal minds has offered to help new Chief Justice Marston Gibson reform the island’s criminal justice system.
Elliott Mottley, QC, who has worked over the past 50 years with four Chief Justices said he supported the CJ’s plans.
“I will, if necessary, put my experience, such as it is, to assist in any way that I can,” the prominent senior attorney told Gibson on Monday.
Noting that he has worked with Chief Justices Sir Kenneth Stoby, who headed the bench from 1959 to 1965, through Sir William Douglas, Sir Denys Williams and then Sir David Simmons who retired last year, Mottley said a change in philosophy was needed.
“I share your view,” said Mottley, “and I’ve seen it in other jurisdictions, that the time has come for a reform of the judicial system.”
Adding that he welcomed the Chief Justice’s comments about more reliance on the Supreme Court’s Civil Procedure Rules, the senior attorney said: “We have to change our culture. We have to change our philosophy.”
