St James North Member of Parliament Rawle Eastmond has dismissed reports that he has either asked for or has been offered a large payout to step aside and allow another man to carry the Barbados Labour Party’s (BLP) flag in the next general elections.
Eastmond, still undecided about his political future, has, however, endorsed one of the candidates-in-waiting should he throw in the political towel.
He was adamant that Opposition Leader Owen Arthur had never asked him to step aside.
“I also heard the rumour that I had already been paid to retire and that I had already pledged to come public and support Clyde Mascoll. But that also is not true,” he stressed in an interview with the SUNDAY SUN yesterday. “The leadership of the BLP would never be party to any such behaviour.”
St James North was mentioned in some circles as a possible constituency for Mascoll to contest, after Arthur said he wanted the economist to be part of his team in the next poll. Two men have already expressed interest in the constituency – chartered accountant Douglas Skeete and attorney-at-law Edmund Hinkson.
