Arawak Cement Company says there will be no cement shortage even as it prepares to close some sections of its plant and temporarily send home an undisclosed number of staff.
The assurance to its local and export markets comes following reports of major staff cuts at the St Lucy company.
Rupert Greene, Arawak’s general manager said in a release that the company’s quarry, crusher, raw mill and kiln circuits would be closed for three months starting in October. However, the cement mill, packing plant and jetty circuits would remain operational to meet the day to day demands of the local and export markets.
Greene blamed the current construction slowdown in Barbados and the region for the drastic action by the company.
According to the general manager, Arawak would have enough cement to satisfy all markets during this time. (CT)
