A fault at the Barbados Light & Power (BL&P) St Thomas sub-station plunged hundreds of homes in the north into darkness around 10:50 p.m. on Sunday.
In a statement today, BL&P said the restoration process began almost immediately and was completed at 1:30 a.m. today.
Transmission and distribution crews identified the cause of the fault and are in the process of completing repairs.
Director Operations, Johann Greaves said that in an occurrence like this, while the fault is being investigated, power supply could be restored.
“Once the fault occurs, the system isolates that fault and electricity is restored to customers using alternative paths. This is critical for us since it limits the impact and reduces the duration of the outage.”
He said this design would be beneficial during the 2020 hurricane season, because it allows Light & Power to manage power supply and maintain reliability for customers.
The company apologised for the inconvenience.
Meanwhile, the Barbados Water Authority (BWA) said several pumping stations were affected by the power outage and some customers could experience a longer time before the system was restored.
Although pumping resumed at all locations early this morning, BWA said in a release, the stoppage had impacted customers in some districts at the higher elevations. However, it takes time for the water pressure to build and normal water supply to be restored.
The facility at Apes Hill, which is impacted by low reservoir levels is still not operational, and around noon, the station at Bowmanston, St John also had to be taken offline because water levels there are too low for pumping to continue.
However, the BWA is urging members of the public to store water as today marks the official start of the hurricane season.
The recommended amount is five gallons per person, per day, per household for a minimum of five days or as much as the household requires.
The fleet of water tankers, reduced from 11 to seven, will assist the affected areas. (PR/SAT)
