Paralysed by the COVID-19 pandemic and decimated by the resulting unemployment from four months of inactivity, Barbados’ important tourism industry will fully reopen next month.

Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley on June 26 laid out the plan for the country’s return to commercial airline traffic with the news that Air Canada, British Airways, Caribbean Airlines and JetBlue aircraft will land at Grantley Adams International Airport (GAIA) again in July, followed by Virgin Atlantic and American Airlines in early August.

“The shareholders of LIAT are having an informal caucus tomorrow [July 27] to determine the future of LIAT and we will be in a better position to speak on that over the course of the next few weeks. We are committed to ensuring there will be effective, affordable, reliable intra-regional travel as part of the product mix,” Mottley told the media from the Prime Minister’s official residence, Ilaro Court.

The reopening plan was revealed during a press conference moments after Minister of Health Jeffrey Bostic confirmed Barbados was now free of active COVID-19 cases, amid 35 days without a new infection, and all previous patients being discharged from isolation at the Harrison Point, St Lucy. (BA)
