More freedom

Barbadians were last night given a little more freedom to move about, play and do their business.

But the resumption of face-to-face classes will have to wait a bit longer, as the Ministry of Education has been unable to complete the clean-up of more than 70 schools affected by the ash fall from La Soufriere volcano in St Vincent.

Instead, online classes will restart on Tuesday, with teachers reporting to duty the day before, Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley revealed in a 30-minute national address yesterday.

“I feel for our children,” she said about the postponement of face-to-face education. “It will require extraordinary support for them from all due to how they have had their provision of education disrupted.”

She said picnics, fetes, parties and karaoke events remain prohibited, as do contact sports such as football, netball and basketball. Practice sessions for sports can also be conducted by individuals, but no spectators are permitted.

Cinemas and drive-ins are now allowed to open, though with only 25 people allowed in concessionary areas at a time, which would be policed by the COVID-19 Monitoring Unit. (BA)
