Port of Spain – Trinidad & Tobago police said they are investigating a “suspicious package” was placed in a multi-storey carpark close to the Office of the Attorney General on Monday.
The action by police resulted in traffic congestion in the heart of the capital.
“The parkade is close to the Attorney General Office and the ministry… and so if they see a suspicious package and they are not sure what it is and our bomb people are going in to check,” Deputy Commissioner of Police, McDonald Jacob told reporters.
“What they will do for safety is evacuate the places and then check the package,” he said, adding the police were taking “all the necessary precaution”.
This latest development comes as the Trinidad & Tobago Police Service (TTPS) denied social media reports that police stations were under attack.
“If an incident such as this one was occurring, an alert by the TTPS or the Ministry of National Security would be issued informing the public,” Jacob said earlier.
The police said in a statement: “The message, claiming that access to Port of Spain has been cut off and that police stations, namely the Besson Street Police Station, is under attack, has been circulating throughout the public of T&T since yesterday, October 17, 2021.”
The statement said it wanted to give the public the assurance that “all checks were made via the Operational Command Centre (OCC) using CCTV footage”.
